General Information about Berlin

Berlin, the capital and seat of government of the Federal Republic of Germany as well as one of its federal states, is the centre of the Berlin-Brandenburg Metropolitan Area. With a population of 3.4 million Berlin is Germany's most populous and largest city.

First documented in the 13th Century, Berlin has successively been the capital of several German states, including the Margraviate and Electorate of Brandenburg, the Kingdom of Prussia and the German Empire. From 1949 to 1990 East Berlin was the capital of the German Democratic Republic. After reunification in 1990 Berlin became the capital of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Berlin is a national and international centre of culture, politics, media and science and is one of the most frequently visited cities on the European continent. Its institutions such as universities, research institutes and museums are internationally renowned.

Climate
Berlin is located in a temperate climate zone on the crossover between maritime and continental climate. The average annual temperature is 9.8°C and the average annual rainfall 581 mm. The average high temperature in March is 4.3°C.

Recommended Clothing

It can still be rather cool and sometimes rainy in the middle of March. You are therefore advised to pack some warm and waterproof clothing. Participants attending the conference dinner are recommended to wear appropriate attire.

Shop opening hours
As a rule, the larger shops and department stores are open Mondays to Fridays from 09.30h to 20.00h. On Saturdays closing hours vary between 16.00h and 20.00h. Banks are open Mondays to Fridays. Opening hours vary but are usually between 10.00h and 16.00h or 10.00h and 18.00h. With very few exceptions banks are closed at weekends.
